Nov 14th: Santa Clarita, CA: Where to begin … Let’s just jump right in with the most ridiculous moment(s). My 10am Austin>Denver>Burbank flight was delayed by an hour and a half which meant I would miss my connection in Denver. Southwest definitely put on the hustle to figure out how to fix this for those of us with connections that would now be missed. Honestly I wasn’t even that worried about it because the CA even wasn’t until the next night. So I just sat back and waited to see what they came up with, which was: Austin>Dallas>San Antonio>Phoenix>Burbank. Wow, right? I think I get why they call them airbuses.
So, we take off from Phoenix for the last leg of the trip and about fifteen minutes in they announce that we are headed BACK to Phoenix because there is a mechanical issue they want to address. At this point I look at the gal sitting next to me who had been on the same crazy journey and just had to laugh. If I’d been a less seasoned traveler I probably would have been freaking out. Instead I was just hoping we didn’t have to switch planes, because who knows how long that would take?
After about 45-50 minutes they decide that the problem is solved and we take off again and actually make it to Burbank! And miraculously, so does my luggage. Total air travel time: nine hours.
Thankfully the party was not until the next night. When I asked my good friend Shannon Okahara if she would be interested in hosting a book launch party in CA, she was all in! She and I and I used to work together as in Las Vegas at Vegas.com in the early naughts before we both had our kiddos, she moved to California and I moved to Colorado. We’ve managed to get together a handful of times since then, but it had been maybe four or five years? You know how it is with some friends though, you just fall right back in and pick up where you left off. The kids may be taller and older looking but we, WE, haven’t changed a bit!
Shannon’s daughter Avery is the sweetest thing ever, check out what she left for me in the guest room? How can you not love this adorable girl?
Shannon is an author as well! Her first book, Tooth on the Loose, came out a few years ago and while I was there she had a reading/signing event at the Santa Clarita Library’s Family Literacy Festival festival, which was fantastic. It’s all author events, all the time!
On the night I arrived I mentioned that I had shipped two boxes of books. Shannon froze, and said two? I only got one box! OH SHIT. Where the hell was the other box? Whatever, one box would have to do …
The party was so much fun, Shannon’s husband Dwight spent all day making an amazing spread. She has made so many great friends in Santa Clarita over the past eleven years, it was a blast meeting them all and sharing the book with them. Shannon somehow got suckered into is currently PTO president for her daughter Avery’s school, so you know I had to read the Persistent Volunteer Stress Disorder from the DSM-V Update essay. Oh, they could definitely relate.
The most amazing moment: This incredible cake made my Molly Sullivan of Molly’s Cake Magic. Can you believe this?? AND it was delicious.
The day after the party, what should arrive but this hot mess:
Not very promising, is it? Apparently the box exploded somewhere along the way and the post office tried to tape it back up. We opened the box to find 21 out of the 24 that had originally been in the box, and they weren’t exactly in perfect, saleable condition. So, I decided to take six of them to the airport with me and hand them out to parents traveling with small kids who looked like they could use a laugh. Gorilla marketing! They all loved it and were so surprised and thankful. It was pretty great.
Postscript: A mere 22 days after I mailed the books to Shannon’s ANOTHER one showed up! OMG.
