Once upon a time, a writer who lived in Orlando called an illustrator who lived in Denver.

“So, Jessica,” said Norine, the writer. “I’ve written all these science-y, snarky observations on parenting. I think they’d make a great gift book for moms. Wanna illustrate it?

“Hell yeah, I do!” said Jessica, who graciously overlooked the fact that Norine had absolutely no money to pay her.

“But —” Jessica, who was also a web designer, paused thoughtfully. “What if we go bigger?”

That got Norine’s attention. “Bigger?”

“What if it’s a blog? And a social media community? And products! And BOOKS.”

Books. Not book. But books. Plural. Whoa. What if it was???

“Do you think we can do that? “ Norine asked.

“I dunno. Let’s see,” said Jessica.

Two weeks later, Norine and Jessica published the very first Science of Parenthood illustration.

Schrodinger's Backpack

That was a year ago, tomorrow. Which makes tomorrow our ONE-YEAR BIRTHDAY. We know.

And while it is totally cliche to say this — but hell, it’s our birthday and we’ll say it if we want to — we really can’t believe it’s been … A … WHOLE … FREAKIN’ … YEAR.

And what a pretty cool year it’s been.

We had a couple of illustrations really take off.

Like this one …

Distance To Deuce Ratio

And this one …

Food Rules

We had a super-fun launch party. Here’s us shoving cake in our faces.

party

We guest-posted on some cool blogs — here’s us on Scary Mommy. And invited cool bloggers, like Something Clever 2.0 and Work In Sweats Mama, to guest post for us.

We got featured by the SITS Girls. And Bonbon Break. They must have liked us over at Bonbon Break because now you can find us there every Friday!

A literary agent asked to represent us. And because we weren’t content just putting our illustrations on the Internet, we opened an online shop so we could plaster them all over mugs and magnets. (They make awesome birthday, Mother’s Day and baby shower gifts by the way. Just sayin’.)

We went to BlogHer in Chicago — an incredible conference for women bloggers — where we learned a lot of cool stuff and met some amazingly cool bloggers. We’d need more server space to list all of the cool women we met there who we’re tickled to call friends. But you can read about some of them Here and Here and Here.

We even got mentioned on CNN.

Someone deserves some presents for all that! After all, what’s a birthday without a ton of presents??? But here’s the best part: The presents are for you! That’s right! YOU! You fabulous readers have already given us a great gift in helping us keep our little blog alive … nourishing it with your comments and your Likes, your Shares, your Tweets, +1s and Pins. Now we want to say THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH! with a really fabulous giveaway.

We couldn’t pull an Oprah and give you all Mercedes. Or houses. Or houses on wheels. But two Science of Parenthood readers WILL receive our HAPPY BIRTHDAY PACK, which includes an official Science of Parenthood ceramic mug; fridge magnets; and a 2014 Science of Parenthood calendar (complete with 12 of our favorite illustrations — one for every month of the year!)

Our grand prize winner gets our MOMMY PARTY PACK (or survival kit … whichever you prefer). This contains everything you need to enjoy a few precious moments of Me Time: A box of Godiva chocolates; a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne; and a selection of SIGNED books from some of the very best mom writers putting fingers to keyboard today:

  • Moms Who Drink And Swear by Nicole Knepper

  • Lost In Suburbia and Rebel Without A Minivan by Tracy Beckerman
  • I Heart My Little A-Holes by Karen Alpert
  • You Have Lipstick On Your Teeth … And Other Things You’ll Only Hear From Your Girlfriends In The Powder Room edited by Leslie Marinelli
  • I Just Want To Pee Alone (late addition, unsigned) edited by Jen of People I Want To Punch In The Throat

Our HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY is open January 13 through January 31. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PACK and GRAND PRIZE winners will be drawn at random and announced on our Blog, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ on February 1. Plus, throughout January, we’ll also be doing random drawings to give away other Science of Parenthood swag. All you have to do is enter. That’s it. Enter the giveaway and hopefully we’ll draw your name. Good luck! Oh, if  you’d like to wish us a happy birthday, we’d sure love to hear from you.

Thank you again, fabulous readers, for making our first year such a success. We look forward to making you replenish your Poise supplies for years to come!
