Childcare will only seem like a “real job” when you have to pay somebody else $20/hr to do it.

  3. Ack, is that the going rate these days??! I feel old. I used to get $10/hour to babysit and I felt rich.

I remember getting $1 an hour when I was 13. Back in the dark ages, to be sure! But yes, in my part of the world $20/hour for a nanny is the high end of average. I pay regular “going out with the girls tonight” babysitters about $12/hour. But for the nanny who did daily pickup and running around to after school activities and also did mother’s helper type things like fold laundry, unpack the dishwasher, set the table, grocery shop, other errands and sometimes even food prep, I paid $20/hour.

  4. Amen! Make this one into a magnet before the holidays – I don’t know any mom who wouldn’t want it!

  5. Ha, yup! It’s expensive! Though the last lady I used only charged $10 an hour. But I had 2 kids and it was $10 PER kid so…

  6. I’ll second that! LOL. Hey Norine – do you have any tips on getting kids to be more appreciative of their belongings? My girls are now 6 and 10. I feel they are old enough to be responsible for their “things”. I’m constantly finding messy rooms, American Girl dolls 1/2 dressed and shoved in the corner, toys on the floor, clothes on the floor, etc. I’ve done checklists. I’ve done the whole “if it’s in the floor it’s going in the trash can” thing. I don’t know what to do to get them to be more appreciative of their belongings. I’m at the point of boxing up everything they own and not letting them have access to it until…..Until what? I don’t know. Any tips would be much appreciated! Thanks! And thank you for stopping by NoSkinnies. I’m loving my SITS day!

  7. When I was a teen, I was charging $5 per hour per kid. Not fun when you’re watching 5 kids…lol

With how kids are today… lol… $20 per hour is necessary.

  8. Of all the days to put out this cartoon. Today I paid someone to watch the baby so I could sneak downstairs to write: the activity that feels like a job even though no one is paying me.

  9. This is great!!! I love the illustration, that is totally what it is like!!! Norine I too got 1$ and hour, and that was watching a few kids, giving baths, dinner and putting them to bed. I had a mother’s helper, where I was home with the girl and I paid 10 an hour. And I would give her extra too!! Since we live in a world that only seems to respect that which we pay top dollar for, child care givers should be making what athletes do!!! xo

  10. So true! And to think about what we’d be worth for all we do at home if we were paid an hourly wage…

  11. Hee hee! I have to admit, it feels like one hell of a job at this second as I am listening to my toddler scream, “I want mommy!” from her crib while she refuses to take her nap. I’d pay a lot more than $20 right now if somebody could come over and make her go to sleep! :/

  12. So basically I need someone to pay me so my work-at-home efforts are appreciated?

    I’m down with that.
